I suoi modelli e i suoi metodi di indagine hanno affrontato le tematiche classiche della disciplina con strumenti innovativi gettando nuova luce su fenomeni quali la formazione e le funzioni del Sé o la formazione di impressioni di personalità. La cognizione sociale ha però anche aperto campi di indagine completamente nuovi come lo studio dei processi impliciti di pensiero e l'analisi del ruolo che questi processi ricoprono nella determinazione della condotta delle persone.
